How to Remove Tree Stumps
If you have felled a tree yourself, the task of removing the stump is left up to you—and it can be as difficult as removing the tree itself.
The process of removing a stump is: digging around the stump, and exposing as many roots as possible. Use a chainsaw, hatchet, or handsaw to cut the larger roots. As you continue digging, you may find smaller roots that can be cut with clippers or loppers. Once you've cut all of the roots around the stump, lift and remove the stump from the ground.
There are other ways of removing the stump from the ground such as using chemicals, however, this will damage the land around it and make it unfit for other trees, bushes, and flowers to grow.
Another do-it-yourself option is the burn method. This may be used alone or in conjunction with one of the two stump removal methods listed above. This is a fast method for removal, but if you live in a neighborhood, you may want to check first that it’s acceptable to use kerosene on your tree stump.
If waiting weeks, working on it for hours, lighting fires, or operating heavy equipment don’t appeal to you, you can always hire a local tree professional!
We here at Black Sheep Tree Service are here to help.
We know that you may be interested in the removal of the tree stump, however in our experience grinding the stump is much more cost-effective and gentler on the landscape.
Stump grinding has a lower impact on the landscape than stump removal. We use a machine to grind the base of the tree down into small wood chips. Grinding is more efficient than stump removal and it leaves the landscape looking better and prevents hazards such as tripping or hitting the stump with a lawn mower.
